Religion - the last 4,000 years
As stated earlier, there have been, of course, a number of attempts to give meaning to the world and what happens in it. One of the earliest integrated detailed attempts that we know of to formally structure meaning is the Judaic religion. This is also our first known monotheism and began approximately 4,000 years ago. The Judaic religion proclaimed that there was only one god and this God had established a covenant with them through ancient prophets. They had amongst their sacred belongs a rule book called the Torah. This religion, just as those based upon it, differed from most other widespread belief systems in many ways.
One major difference was that there was a rather clear dichotomy between good and evil in Judaism. A major aim was to please God. Similar to earlier religions, this reduced some stress while at the same time being a major source of more stress.
