Early History
As named earlier, Cuneiform is the earliest written language that we know of and this means that the Sumerian’s culture is the first culture that we have something recorded by inhabitants of the culture. Therefore, I can write some things about the Sumerians that may well be true.
Sumerian Culture But how did this culture come to be? How were they able to form large groupings of people and keep any order? These questions we can not answer. As I wrote earlier it is possible to keep a small group (10-20) in order where the strongest (physically or strategically) determines who can or must do something. This principle may still work with a somewhat larger group, but there comes a time when the number of people in the group will not be controllable by force.
Some of Sumer’s written history goes back to the 27th century BC, although the language used during the first 2-3 hundred years is very difficult to interpret. Sumerian language continued as a sacred language and the Sunerian history back to 2,700 BC is in cuneiform.
The Sumerian city-states rose to power during the prehistoric Ubaid and Uruk periods. Sumerians apparently had many gods and their religion appears to have been based partially on a myth of creation (the combining of male and female beings). Uruk probably had a population of about 60,000 and Sumer a total of a million. It was probably governed by a priest-king and a council of elders – men and women. |
